Print this manuscript e-mail this essay Comment on this manuscript Vientiane – The Lao Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a travel caution for Thailand, particularly to Bangkok where a mass protest was in progress this Saturday, media reports announced Monday. The ministry warned the common public, officers, entrepreneurs and scholars to avoid travelling to Thailand while the Internal Security Act is still in force, the Vientiane Times reported.
The Thai executive has placed Bangkok and parts of the capital’s 7 surrounding provinces under the safety act from March 11-23 in expectation of possible violence from protests. An approximate 100,000 protestors gathered in the capital next weekend to try to persuade the govt. of Thai P. M. Abhisit Vejjajiva to resigns and call for new elections. About thirty countries have issued travel alerts to their voters to avoid Thailand, particularly Bangkok, if at all possible this month.
The Lao Foreign Minisrty also warned its voters working in Bangkok not to go to the areas where the protests are happening.
There are a computed 120,000 Lao nationals working as labourers in Thailand, which boasts a much bigger more successful economy than its commie neighbor but a less stable political system.
Laos has been under singe-party commie rule since December, 1975. Protests and more indicators of political disturbance are uncommon in the land-locked country of 6,000,000 folks.
